The Socialist International President Pedro Sánchez welcomed the Vice Presidents who came to Madrid from all continents to attend the Presidium Meeting. Pedro Sánchez opened his speech by referring to the important developments in the Middle East with the ceasefire and release of hostages. He said that we hope that we expect this will be the end of the war in Gaza.
The Socialist International is committed to follow the next steps in cooperation with our two member parties in the region Fatah and The Democrats to ensure that this deal will lead to a viable and just peace leading to a two-state solution. and support for two state solution.
All participants agreed we agreed in this crucial moment to support peace forces in Isreal.
Socialist International Vice President’s congratulated Pedro Sánchez for being a leading progressive voice in the world and for peace migration and gender equality and for making Spain an example of global responsibility by increasing its development assistance in times where key countries are making substantial cuts.
Presidium members highlighted the need to unite the efforts of all progressive forces in Europe and the world to show the dynamism of our commitment in promoting and protecting common goals for example the fight against climate change, equality, respect of human rights, respect of international humanitarian law and protect democratic institutions against the ultra-international.
All participants expressed their solidarity to our members that are in jail or persecuted in Belarus, Kirghizstan and Niger.
They also discussed in-depth the situation in countries in conflict like Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Venezuela and Ukraine.
Vice Presidents expressed their support to Socialist International I member party CHP and its leader Ozgur Ozel for the difficult and courageous political struggle they give while a big number of elected mayors are in jail and the Mayor of Istanbul Ekrem İmamoğlu is still in captivity without a clear indictment.
A commitment has been reached on working with other progressives’ forces. There will be more developments in the next months.
Today presidium gather different forces. It is important to highlight as the President of the Socialist International stated today:
“Progressive politics is not only alive, but also essential, for peace, Democracy, human dignity and social justice. We are a global family united by solidarity, driven by hope and committed to action”
Pedro Sánchez summarised the Malta summit and an earlier meeting in New York as the launch of a progressive platform to defend democracy, connecting think tanks and governments—including Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, and Chile—with a follow-up planned in Madrid. He urged coordinated action among progressives to confront the far right, rejected anti-migration, anti-climate, and anti-multilateral stances associated with Trump, and argued for renewables, competitiveness, and growth. On migration, he stressed regular pathways, economic and social contributions, and the priority of integration. He reaffirmed values of democracy, multilateralism, feminism, and education, and called to recognise the State of Palestine and support permanent status at the UN.
President of the Socialist International Pedro Sánchez officially announced, and it’s been decided in the Socialist International Council Meeting in Istanbul that the Global Progressive Foundation has become a reality. With this initiative the Socialist International will be able to create a broad network of corporation between progressive parties, movements, civil societies and activists.
The Socialist International is creating a global Network of Parliamentarians to enhance progressive politics within the parliaments, facilitate exchanges and supporting joint initiatives across regions
